John Egan, president of UpWord Communications, boasts more than 20 years of experience in the news media. He founded UpWord Communications in May 2006 with the goal of helping magazines, newspapers, entrepreneurs, businesses and nonprofit organizations spread their messages in a competent, professional manner.

Most recently, John was editor of the Austin Business Journal for two years and managing editor for five years. During his seven-year tenure at the Austin Business Journal, John built a solid reputation as a journalist and built a strong network of business contacts. Furthermore, he built a repertoire of knowledge about various industries, including commercial real estate, residential real estate, health care, technology and banking. Before moving to Austin, Texas, in 1999, John was the copy editor for the St. Louis Business Journal, the wire editor for the Belleville-News Democrat in Illinois and a reporter for the News Tribune Co. in Jefferson City, Mo., where he covered state government and politics for morning and afternoon newspapers.

John earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Kansas (Rock Chalk, Jayhawk!) However, he does root for the home team, the University of Texas Longhorns – when the Jayhawks aren’t playing them, of course. But don’t hold John’s alma mater against him. Professionally, he’s able to play for any winning team.
